What and when do hedgehogs eat extra food?
Hedgehogs are wild and free-living rodents that can easily find sufficient food for most of the year, but there are times when they are happy to eat extra food. Especially in spring and late fall.
In both seasons, the natural food supply is not particularly large. While neither ripe fruit nor insects close to the ground are available in large numbers in spring, there is again a lack of food in late fall after the natural crop rotation - especially as other small animals compete strongly with the hedgehogs for the increasingly scarce food supply at this time in preparation for hibernation.
In spring, the hedgehog's own reserves are used up from the winter break. Hedgehogs need sufficient new food for the new feeding and reproduction period - which is not always available in sufficient quantities, especially after frosty or prolonged winters.
Hedgehogs give birth to their young in the second half of the year. Hedgehogs' food requirements are particularly high during the first breeding period. As hedgehogs usually give birth to several young, there is direct competition for food between the young hedgehogs. There is not always enough food available naturally to get all the young through the winter.
