What and when do hedgehogs eat additional food?

Hedgehogs are wild, free-living rodents that readily find sufficient food for most of the year. However, there are times when they readily accept additional food, particularly in spring and late autumn. During both seasons, the natural food supply is limited. While in spring, neither ripe fruit nor ground-level insects are available in large numbers, in late autumn, after the natural crop rotation, food is once again scarce – especially since other small animals, preparing for hibernation, compete fiercely with hedgehogs for the increasingly scarce food supply at this time of year.

By spring, the hedgehog's own reserves are depleted by the winter break. For the new feeding and breeding season, hedgehogs need sufficient new food – which is not always available in sufficient quantities, especially after frosty or long winters.

Hedgehogs give birth to their young in the second half of the year. During the initial breeding season, hedgehogs' nutritional needs are particularly high. Since hedgehogs usually give birth to several young, there is direct competition for food among the young. There isn't always enough food naturally available to sustain all the young through the winter.

Complete food for hedgehogs.

Place approximately 4 tablespoons of Quiko hedgehog food into a shallow bowl daily. Add some fresh water (but not milk) to a second bowl! Feed some raw minced meat or lean beef several times a week. Ground beef heart, offal, and fresh, unsalted fish are also suitable. Mealworms are a special treat. Scrambled eggs (without fat) and small pieces of sweet fruit are also a welcome change. Remember that hedgehogs are nocturnal animals and only eat in the evening!
