Washing your hands properly – is it sufficient for hand disinfection?
The foundation of hand hygiene is, of course, handwashing. There's hardly anything more obvious for preventing bacteria, viruses, and fungi from spreading and causing infection.
Most importantly, wash your hands regularly. This applies not only after dirty activities, but also after many everyday errands—for example, after using public transport, in restaurants, supermarkets, and anywhere where many people come together and touch many things.
Hand hygiene is of course all the more crucial in areas where hygiene is of crucial importance – i.e. when dealing with elderly or sick people, but also when administering and/or taking medication.

Although washing hands is perhaps the most important measure of personal hygiene in everyday life, effective hand disinfection is the right means to effectively and reliably prevent pathogens from spreading.
Here, too, the more people in the immediate vicinity and the more direct the contact, the more important hand disinfection is. This applies in restroom areas, as well as in daycare centers, schools, and after-school care facilities, as well as when handling food and in medical settings. How does effective hand disinfection work?
A prerequisite for reliably effective hand disinfection is thorough hand washing – there are very practical reasons for this; if residues of dirt remain on the skin, viruses and bacteria can settle underneath, while the hand disinfectant cannot reach the affected areas and cannot take effect.
